Five Shark-Infested Vacation Spots for the Adventurous

Five Shark-Infested Vacation Spots for the Adventurous

Everyone who lived through ‘Jaws’ in the 1970s has a vivid memory of what it must look like for a shark to lunge at you with those dead eyes and sharp glistening teeth. Most people wouldn’t want to venture anywhere near a body of water where that sort of demise might be waiting for you. But there are places around the world where sharks seem to want to gather and await adventurous souls.

Gansbaai, South Africa
South Africa is home to some of the world’s most shark-infested waters. In fact Gansbaai, South Africa, is in the area known as ‘Shark Alley’. Gansbaai is a popular holiday resort and fishing town, and it’s also the great white shark capital of the world. Great white sharks are probably the most terrifying sharks in the world, because of their giant mouths and lifeless eyes. These intimidating sharks have been feared in many movies such as Jaws. There are so many of these notoriously frightening beasts in the narrow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, that one of the most popular tourist attractions in ‘Shark Alley’ is shark cage diving.

For a few hundred dollars, tourist boats will take divers to the shark-infested waters, drop them overboard in a cage, and dangle raw meat in the water waiting for the shark to approach the cage. If you don’t feel brave enough to jump in a cage with other fearless tourists to be dangled in front of a great white, you can take a safer approach to seeing sharks by taking a boat tour of Shark Alley and just staying above water. You can watch the sharks feasting on seals as you sit on deck. No matter how you like watching your sharks, you can’t go wrong in Gansbaai, home to the greatest numbers of great whites in the world.

Kosi Bay, South Africa
Another shark-infested South African location is Kosi Bay, Kwa-Zulu-Natal. Kosi Bay is actually a series of four lakes in the KwaZulu Natal preserve, which connects to the Indian Ocean. Although the area is picturesque and serene, just beneath the water lurks the most aggressive of all sharks, the Zambezi sharks, or bull sharks. These sharks aren’t just relegated to the ocean―they have been known to swim into freshwater lakes and estuaries looking for a meal. In fact, in the United States they have been spotted swimming up the Mississippi River, as far north as Ohio. So if you thought swimming in a lake or river would keep you safe from a shark attack, you might want to think again.

Bolinas, USA
Speaking of the United States, there are two locations stateside that have their own deadly reputations. Bolinas, a small beach in northern California that is known for its reclusive residents, is also known for not-so-reclusive great white sharks. Bolinas and nearby Stinson Beach are part of the ‘Red Triangle’ in northern California, where great whites are known to patrol the waters in huge packs. Surfers along this area of the coastline are brave enough just for sticking it out in the cold waters, but braving the sharks makes them even more courageous. The wet suits they wear make it even worse―they look very much like a sea lion, which is a great white’s favorite meal. In 2002, a 14-foot great white leaped out of the water and grabbed a surfer, who survived but needed 100 stitches to close his four bite wounds.

New Smyrna Beach, Florida
New Smyrna Beach, Florida, holds the dubious reputation as being the ‘shark attack capital of the world’. In New Smyrna Beach, sharks are known not only for accidentally biting people, but also for just bumping into them in the surf. The sea along this popular beach resort town is teeming with tiger, blacktip, and spinner sharks. Although these species of sharks are not as aggressive as bull or great white sharks, they have been known to attack humans by accident, usually surfers. But there are a huge number of people in the water almost year-round in this area, and floating people are easily mistaken for sea turtles or other prey, when you’re looking at them from beneath the surface. More people have been attacked by sharks off the coast of New Smyrna than any other place in the world.

Recife, Brazil
But as frightening as shark attacks are, even worse is the idea of fatal shark attacks. A small seaside town on the Atlantic coast of Brazil, Recife, is the most fatal place for shark attacks in the world. Since 1992, there have been more than 50 shark attacks, with 16 of them fatal. The lovely urban beach, sunny days, and gentle offshore breezes make the area beautiful, but the beach has earned a reputation as the most deadly shark attack spot in the world, because of the high concentration of aggressive and dangerous bull sharks.

If you’re tired of just lying in the sun working on your tan and you long for something a little more spine-tingling, then check out one of these spots for your next vacation. But if your vacation goes from spine-tingling to spine-chomping, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

10 Top Tips On Love and Dating Advice

10 Top Tips On Love and Dating Advice

Short term? Long term? No matter where your relationship is at, there are 10 basic must haves to ensure loving survival. Follow this guide to dating and keep your love life on track. Find out what every great partnership needs to last the distance.

1: Sense of humor. Having the ability to laugh together may seem very simple, but laughter really is the best medicine. A sense of humor is probably the most important dating secret. Laughing at the hideous dinner at your parent’s house, the mortifying work Christmas party, the burnt toast, the failed interview, is very therapeutic. Being able to laugh about it later really does reduce the tension. Be sure you are laughing together though, and not poking fun at the other at their expense.

2: Personal space. A great dating technique is to allow yourselves to have your own space. Couples shouldn’t live out of each other’s pockets. By spending time apart, you are making the time you are together more precious and more quality driven. You need to be able to trust your lover when you are apart. You will also have more things to talk about when you are together and value your time together and make it more special.

3: Fight fair. Every couple fights. Every couple needs their own list of rules on what constitutes fair play. You shouldn’t dredge up past errors when they have already been dealt with previously. Don’t keep rehashing. You should also not bring in mentions of family members and exes. Saying” you are just like your dead beat brother” is not fighting fair. Other worthy rules include employing strategies like never leaving the house without apologizing, never sleeping on a fight, and no not talking. If things start to get really out of hand try having a 10 minute time out rule so that you can both calm down a bit before really hurtful things are said.

4: Little acts. Thoughts and words that show the other that you are still thinking about them are very important. Unexpected phone calls just to say “I love you”, random text messages and the like are all great for making the other feel wanted and special. Over the years these tiny little acts all add up and can make a huge difference as to how well the other perceives they are loved. If you are one of those people that get caught up at work and can never remember, use your personal organizer to remind you.

5: Comfortable silence. Can you spend hours together without saying a word in companionable silence? This is true intimacy. You shouldn’t feel compelled to fill every little silence with meaningless chatter. Can you walk the beach hand in hand in loving silence? Can you survive the road trip in quiet bliss (road map dramas obviously excluded)? This is a great indicator that you are in sync together and a great indicator for your dotage.

6: Life altering experience. No relationship has been challenged until it encounters one of these. Death or illness of a loved one, loss of a job or losing the family fortune are all tragic experiences that we will all at some time have to deal with. These terrible events all require support from our loved one. Seeing each other at their absolute lowest is a great relationship leveler. While these crises test your relationship they will also strengthen your emotional bonds if you can survive as a couple. Seeing how your other half deals with and supports you through these difficult times is a great pointer for your future.

7: Sure fire sex position. Once you have gotten past the honeymoon phase of your relationship, sex often doesn’t have the pressing urgency that it did earlier on. Every couple needs to have a favored position that pleases all for when time is at a premium. Knowing what the other likes means you can excite the other in a short space of time using minimum energy. You are still experiencing the physical and emotional intimacy and not drifting apart while waiting for a better time.

8: Belief in the other: It is important to have genuine belief in your partner. You must have faith in their abilities and ethics. If you don’t believe in them you shouldn’t be with them.
Faith and belief are huge building blocks for any long term relationship.

9: Having secrets. Keeping some things secret is perfectly fine. Old love letters, diaries, etc are perfectly harmless. So long as the secret isn’t going to hurt the other then it is okay to keep it to yourself. Obviously, we are not talking secret addictions, gambling and extra curricular sexual activities here. You should not be keeping secrets about important things. Long term couples can find it difficult to determine where one of you starts and the other finishes. Preserving some sense of your self is vital for staying happy and sane.

10: Attraction: There has to be something more than just physical beauty that attracts you to the other. You have to like your lover. Their face and body will change over the years, so deep down there has to be something there that draws you in and keeps you coming back for more.

To stand the test of time all relationships need these points. By utilizing this helpful dating and relationship advice you too can become long term lovers.

Good Luck,

How to Manage Long Road Trips With Children

How to Manage Long Road Trips With Children

There are many different ways to manage long road trips with children, and they all need to be considered in some respect, as each child is different and will respond to different things. The first point to note is that children will get bored at some point on a long road trip, and they need to be entertained or they’ll end up driving parents crazy with their complaints about the journey and how they don’t want it to go on any longer.

Planning the journey first can help, as you can work out how long it is between each service station, and plan out toilet breaks for the entire family. These can be combined with lunch and drink breaks to make sure no one needs to eat a meal or drink something potentially messy while in the car, and the driver gets a rest.

Children can decide they’re hungry at the most inopportune times, so having some healthy snacks will always be useful for keeping children quiet, particularly if it’s nearly time to stop. If children are going to get bored quickly then setting up something for them to watch or do is a great idea. A travel board game will keep children occupied for at least an hour, but an IPad or laptop with a film or television show on will keep them busy for even longer.

If it isn’t possible to have anything on to watch, then putting on an audio book through some headphones will keep a child occupied as they listen to the story being told. This is a great plan for anyone going on a car journey of around five hours, as most audio books take up to that time to finish, and will keep a child busy all the way.

Slightly older children might want to do more than play a board game or watch or listen to something, and in cases like these it’s handy to have a portable games console. These can be purchased for quite a low cost from any online retailer, and having a few games ready for them to play should keep them busy all the way to the destination.

With each of these there’s a chance a child could become carsick. There are a few different remedies to this such as a bag of sweets for them to suck on, fizzy water to drink, and even wristbands which apply pressure in a certain way that stops carsickness completely.

Preparing for a Great Road Trip

Preparing for a Great Road Trip

Young women enjoying life in a convertable sports car.

With the prices of airplane tickets skyrocketing, if you are traveling within the country, it is often advisable to take a road trip instead of a plane. Road trips can also be extremely exciting and spontaneous. If you are traveling by plane, you cannot stop to see the world’s largest ball of yarn on a whim, but if you are driving, you can do whatever you want and go wherever the wind takes you. Sometimes, some of the best-laid plans need to be thrown to the wind in favor of life lessons and experiences, and that is exactly what a road trip provides. If you are planning the next Great American Road Trip for this summer, what follows are some tips for you to make the most of your time.

Pack a Map

In the modern age of GPS systems and smart phones, reading a map is truly a lost art. By turning off your electronic devices and relying on your trusty map and your sense of direction, you can learn a great deal. If you are too focused on your GPS system, you are going to miss all the scenery around you. Don’t be afraid to just look out of the window for a bit, and don’t be afraid to get a little bit lost. As we are in the age of electronic devices, even if you do get lost, you know you can always find your way.

Use Your Camera

Take lots of pictures on your trip. Even silly pictures of the passengers in the car are part of your road trip memories. Use the camera liberally, especially if it is a digital one. Any time you stop, be sure to take pictures, too. You don’t want to forget any of the awesome things you’ll do on this trip, and you certainly don’t want to forget any of the wonderful scenery you’ll pass. Take all sorts of pictures; you might even want to check out a photography book from the library and read it as you drive to learn some tips about how to make the most of your digital camera.

Bring Food

Stopping for food can be fun, but if you cannot find a restaurant and hunger strikes, you want to be able to avoid crabbiness. In order to do that, you must pack food and water. Furthermore, if your car breaks down and you are stranded for a while, you want to be sure to have supplies with you. Always pack extra food and water and, when you make a pit stop, stock up. You can never have enough trail mix, granola bars, and water bottles.

Stay Clean

Clean your car before you start out on the road trip. You don’t have to have your car professionally detailed because it will just get dirty again, but it doesn’t hurt to run a vacuum over the seats and floors and get up all of those nasty, winter particles. You don’t want to travel in a dirty car, so be sure to take your garbage with you every time you leave the car, as well. Of course, be sure you dispose of all garbage properly.

Play DJ

You won’t want to talk to each other during every minute of your road trip. Talking that much is almost impossible. For those moments that you just want a little quiet time, have a mix CD prepared. You can even prepare several CDs, one for each mood of the trip, and listen to them all as you go.

Healthy Road Trip Snacks

Healthy Road Trip Snacks

Even if you’re not a calorie conscious person, it is wise to keep away from the chocolate bars and ice cream sodas, as the intake of sugar in these products can make you drowsy. The next few lines will throw light on healthy snacks that are favorable on a road trip.

Fruits and Vegetables
On any road trip, a fair share of fruits such as bananas, apples, grapes, and oranges are a great way to fight hunger. You can have these fruits either whole or opt for a fruit salad. In case you decide to carry fruit salad on your road trip, see to it that it’s kept in a little ice box. You can also dice fruits and vegetables and make your favorite dips. Carrot sticks and cherry tomatoes too make a great snack. Carrying a small pocket knife always comes in handy during a road trip.

Snacks at Restaurants
If you haven’t packed healthy snacks for your road trip and want to stop for a quick bite, you can order an omelet stuffed with vegetables and accompanied with brown bread. If you have a sweet tooth, you could choose a muffin which has a good nutritional value. A glass of fresh fruit juice adds to the fiber and vitamin quotient. You can also choose whole wheat toast with some peanut butter. For all you potato lovers, baked potato chips are a good option instead of the greasy deep-fried ones. Sandwiches with spinach and low-fat cheese are another great option. Make sure you order whole wheat bread for your sandwiches. For those who cannot resist chicken, preferably opt for the baked variety, rather than the fried ones.

Dry Fruits
These are a great snack on a long road trip. Dry fruits and nuts are a great combination for any road trip, be it any place. You can pack a whole variety of raisins along with almonds, walnuts, and pecans to add that tangy flavor to your appetite. See to it that you consume these in small proportions, rather than all at one go, as too much of anything can cause stomach upsets.

Cookies
These are a favorite with children on road trips. Keep in mind the type of cookies that you take along. Avoid gooey cookies that can mess up the interiors of the car. Dry cookies are a safe option when it comes to road trips. You can choose walnut and almond cookies or the ones with chocolate chips, depending on the preferences of your children. Cookies made from oat are another great option for any road trip.

During a road trip make sure that you consume a lot of water to avoid dehydration. Scoops of yogurt and fresh fruit juice along the way are a refreshing way to beat the heat. Packing a healthy snack on a road trip doesn’t mean cramming in snacks that could serve an entire generation. Pack the required amount of snacks that you will need for that specific trip and enjoy the memorable experience.

How To Plan Meals for A Camp Trip

How To Plan Meals for A Camp Trip

Camping is a lot of fun for many people, who love to travel and have a good time. However, there are certain considerations that you have to keep in mind when going for camping. Usually, for a majority of people, the most important consideration is to ensure that they have sufficient, good food to sustain themselves during the camp. You need to ensure that the food can be cooked, or is available at the camping site, especially if you are going out with kids or family. Without adequate food, your trip will not be really interesting or pleasurable. Here’s how you can plan and ensure the availability of sufficient and good food for the trip:

Consult Others: While planning your camping food recipes, you first of all need to find out how many meals you would require. You may even ask for the opinions of other camping members or participants as to what type of foods they would prefer.

Storage Space: If there is a lot of space available to carry things with you, you have the alternative of bringing a couple of additional meals. This helps in case some food is ruined or spoiled, or if the participants choose to eat a bit more.

Food Options: Snacks and beverages are the most common options added in the food list. The main part of the food for camping trip can be any kind of protein-rich foodstuff, like beans, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, etc. You may also consider potatoes, bread rolls, cooked ears of corn, or even rice. Salad or green canned vegetables are a good option to be included in camping lunches and dinners. However, the kind of camping foodstuff, that you would think of taking along, will very much depend upon the sort of camping you will be doing.

Camping Style: If you are considering a backpacking camping style, the meal options may be very limited, such as dehydrated food. On the other hand, in a recreational, vehicle camping or cabin camping style, you have many options regarding the food that you can carry, as you would have space as well as the basic amenities of a home. However, it is very crucial to devise the camping food ideas well in advance, even though you may be located in a resort camping site, and may have a refrigerator, oven, and cooking stove. You should keep in mind that the cost of food at resorts can be really expensive.

Equipment To Carry: Food for camping can be as simple or as fancy as you desire. You may blend both types by cooking simple lunches or dinners, and making it elegant by following it up with wine in real wine glasses. You will have to be extra careful when it comes to packing those glasses for the trip though. Carrying a simple cooking stove can help you in coming up with varieties of good meals for camping trips. You can cook nearly any type of breakfast, lunch, or dinner food item, simply using a pot, a pan, and a stove. Moreover, foods in foil packets, prepared on a grill, are largely preferred as camping foods, and do not need any camping cookware. All you require is good quality aluminum foil, to form a sealed cooking package for vegetables and other foods.

Use Leftovers: You should not forget that dinner leftovers can be utilized to cook great brunches. For instance, the leftover corn scraped from the cob, and baked potatoes cut into pieces can be turned into a delicious hot meal, when mixed with scrambled eggs in a big frying pan. You may use some amount of bacon grease for frying, and also include any leftover pieces of bacon.

These were just a few tips to be adhered to while preparing for camping trips. In order to have a good camping experience, the above steps will come in handy to determine how many meals you would need, and what you can or cannot carry along.

What to Pack for Backpacking Trips

What to Pack for Backpacking Trips

Packing on a Budget

If you are planning a long backpacking trip in Europe, South America, or elsewhere, you have probably started to think about what to pack. Usually, backpacking trips involve a lot of travel by bus, train, or even hitchhiking, and getting from one place to another can often mean getting as close as possible and then walking the rest of the way. The reason for this is that backpackers are traveling on a budget and usually don’t want to rent a car or hire a taxi to take them everywhere they need to go. Traveling on a budget means packing light, and when preparing for a backpacking trip this can be one of the most challenging tasks.

Half the Clothes, Twice the Money

A handy rule of thumb for all types of travel is to bring half as many clothes as you think you need and twice as much money as you think you need. Unless you have a natural talent for packing light and being thrifty, it is probably a good idea to follow this advice. For almost all backpackers, from beginners to seasoned veterans, money is the first thing that runs out and excess clothing ends up being a burden. You can wash clothes on the road, whether in laundry facilities, bathroom sinks, or a local (clean) creek, but it’s much more difficult to come by extra money in a pinch.

Empty Space

Once you’ve cut the clothes you plan to pack in half, you will probably notice that you have a little bit of extra room in your backpack. Although it might be tempting to fill your pack to the gills before you leave for your trip, consider leaving a little bit of empty space. There are two reasons that this is a good idea. First, as you travel, you are likely to pick up a few new things. Even if you are not the sort of person who collects souvenirs, you may be given gifts by fellow travelers, you may acquire new books to read on the road, and you may realize that you’ve forgotten to pack something crucial and choose to acquire it as you go. If you find that you already have enough space in your backpack for these new acquisitions, you will thank yourself.

Packing in a Hurry

The second reason to leave a little extra room in your pack is that, on the road, you often don’t have time or energy to keep unpacking and repacking in the most efficient possible way. If you’re like most people, you’ve probably tried several different packing configurations already, just out of excitement for your trip. Although it’s good to work packing strategies out in advance, there will surely be some days when you just want to throw everything in the pack haphazardly and hit the road. Having a little bit of extra space in your backpack will give you the flexibility to repack in a hurry if you need to.

Odds and Ends

Every seasoned traveler has a certain number of things they think are indispensable for backpacking trips. The only way to discover what your unique must-have items are is to travel yourself and find out what you keep needing or wanting over and over again. If you are new to backpacking, you will probably hear some packing suggestions that don’t make any sense at all to you. It’s okay if you don’t see why 30 rubber bands could come in handy on the road, but don’t shun all these suggestions automatically. Consider packing some things you wouldn’t have thought of on your own, and you may be surprised at what you end up using. If you don’t find a use for them, you can always get rid of them later.

In addition to lots of rubber bands (useful for everything!), here are some suggestions for useful, multi-purpose items that you can pack without wasting too much space: plastic bags of various sizes, a padlock (this is a must if you plan to stay in hostels), a deck of playing cards, a sewing kit, a knife, a travel towel, a small flashlight, and a small pad of notepaper. Other backpacking and travel websites can be consulted for more comprehensive lists of suggestions, but with these items in your pack, there is not much you won’t be able to handle!
